Stamina Li / Sta’Sax
Biography
Stamina Li, also known as Sta’Sax, is a Martinican-born reggae artist, chanter, and saxophonist whose career has been deeply rooted in sound system culture, live instrumentation, and conscious music for more than two decades. Originally from Madinina, Martinique, he grew up surrounded by music from an early age through his father, himself an accomplished musician and multi-instrumentalist.
Influenced by Caribbean rhythms such as Bèlè, Biguine, and Mazurka alongside Jazz, Roots Reggae, Blues, and Dub, Stamina Li developed a unique musical identity shaped by both traditional culture and modern sound system energy.
Inspired by legendary artists and musicians including Charlie Parker, Burning Spear, Alpha Blondy, The Skatalites, and many of the great Jamaican deejays of the 80s and 90s, he began his journey first as a vocalist and mic-chanter before expanding his craft through live saxophone performance. His ability to move naturally between chanting, singing, and live improvisation quickly earned him recognition within reggae and dub circles across Europe.
During the mid-1990s, Stamina Li began recording professionally in Martinique before later moving to France, where he co-founded the original Wassmuffin Sound alongside close collaborators and artists from the Martinican community. The collective became a strong platform for sound system sessions, community events, radio shows, artist development, and cultural promotion throughout Montpellier and surrounding areas.
These early Wassmuffin years also led to opportunities opening shows for legendary reggae artists including Buju Banton, Mighty Diamonds, Dennis Brown, and Culture.
After relocating to the UK in the early 2000s, Stamina Li continued building his reputation both as a recording artist and live performer. Based in London, he became active within the UK roots and dub scene, performing across England and Europe with various sound systems, bands, and collectives. He later co-founded Togeda Inna Di Gideon, a project focused on promoting conscious reggae music and supporting emerging artists through live showcases and productions.
Alongside his vocal career, his instrumental identity as Sta’Sax became widely respected within the international dub scene. Known for blending deep reggae grooves with improvisational saxophone melodies, his music has travelled far beyond the Caribbean and the UK, reaching audiences across France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and beyond.
Releases such as “Skank To Azania,” “Magic Blow,” “Learn Up The Amharic,” “Satta Steppa,” and “Breath Of Life” helped establish Sta’Sax as a distinctive voice within modern Roots & Dub culture.
Over the years, Stamina Li has collaborated and shared stages with a wide range of respected artists and musicians including Luciano, Blackout JA, Cali P, Queen Ifrica, Mystic Messiah, Vibrate, Hornsman Coyote, and many more. He has also performed at major festivals and events including Reggae Bus Festival, United Nations Of Dub Weekender, Goodly Words London, and numerous sound system sessions throughout Europe.
Beyond music, Stamina Li has always remained connected to community work, cultural development, and independent artistic growth. Through the Wassmuffin movement, he contributed to building platforms that combined music, community empowerment, and creative independence — values that still remain central to the label today.
Whether performing as a conscious reggae vocalist or stepping forward as Sta’Sax with his unmistakable saxophone sound, Stamina Li continues to represent authentic Roots & Culture music with passion, spirituality, and originality.
As his motto says:
“The Real Medicine Is The Music… Sta! Sta! Sta!”
